On March 2, the SOUZ Cultural Project organized a presentation of works by their new collaborator, artist Annabelle Hill Loureiro, who lives and works in London.
Annabelle’s unique collages are displayed at the exhibition in dialogue with drawings of nudes by the French artist François Sahuc.
Annabel Hill Loureiro is a British artist working from the human form, whose practice explores various aspects of human nature and emotions. She mainly uses painted collage to break away from traditional representations of the figure, creating images that combine figuration and abstraction. Her works are made in a unique style merging elements of traditional art, contemporary mediums and collage.
Annabel graduated from Central Saint Martins with a 1st class BA (hons). Work experience in theatre departments followed, which led to storyboarding for film and working on set, where she became interested in prosthetic make-up application. Annabel became part of the principal make-up department with designer Jenny Shircore, working on major film productions, she also worked on productions at the Royal Opera House. She still creates theatre sets for children’s productions.
Over time, Annabel returned to the life drawing studio working primarily in charcoal. This led to a period of work doing large charcoal portraits. Wanting to work more in colour with immediacy, painted collage paper came to the life sessions.
The torn or cut pieces of imagined anatomy allowed the figures to form yet gave room for play with partial abstraction. Despite the complexity of collage technique, she works exclusively from life, capturing the moods and emotions of her models in her pieces.
Among the first guests of the evening were Konstantin Andrikopoulos, Stephanie Chetverikova, Anna Andronova, Evgenia Milova and Grigory Tumanov, Polina Kitsenko, Liza Nekrasova, Pavel Kamin, and many others.
