“Music should always be with you,” Sergey Alfyorov used to say. An artist with a unique style, Alfyorov worked with various mediums, from pastel and watercolor to colored pencils and black printing ink. Among all types of supports he favored paper; however, he considered his works to be more than drawings as he blended Chinese painting techniques with traditions of Western art. At the heart of his work lies the philosophy of New Age — a synthesis of diverse cultures and schools of thought.
Artist statement
Sergey was born in Uzbekistan’s capital Tashkent in 1951; there, he studied at the Tashkent Art School.

In 1972, he moved to Moscow, where he joined the nonconformist art scene. In 1974, he took part in an independent exhibition in the Izmailovo Park.

In 1977, he participated in the first exhibition organized by the Moscow City Committee of Graphic Artists on Malaya Gruzinskaya Street. Following the era of apartment exhibitions in the 1970s and 1980s, he took part in numerous shows held in Moscow’s exhibition halls and galleries during the Perestroika period. After spending extensive stints working in Berlin and London, Alfyorov returned to Russia and bought himself a house in the town of Kozelsk, located close to the monastery of Optina Pustyn. As an artist, he worked both in Kozelsk and Moscow before his journey through life came to an abrupt end following a tragic accident in 2004.

Alfyorov left behind hundreds of striking works, many of which are now owned by the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and numerous private art collectors.
